L Mawby: A Sparkling Jewel Among Michigan Wineries

Whenever I go to Traverse City, there are a handful of wineries that are on my MUST VISIT list, even if we only have time to visit a few. L Mawby is one of them; I love their tasting room experience, and I love their sparkling wine.

So I was absolutely thrilled to discover that Larry Mawby would be presenting a workshop called Celebrate the Season with Michigan Sparkling Wines at the recent Grand Rapids Wine & Food Festival.

Larry’s wit matched the bubbly we were drinking, and, after showing us the proper way to uncork sparkling wine, we were treated to five Michigan sparkling wines. They were:

L Mawby Blanc de Blanc (dry chardonnay)

L Mawby Talisman (reserve, oaky, complex)

Bel Lago Brut Rose’ (tank fermented, fruit forward)

Chateau Chantal Celebrate

M Lawrence Detroit

Along the way he explained the sweetness scale of sparkling wines (Brut, Extra Dry, Sec, Demi Sec, and Doux). My favorite of the evening was Chateau Chantal’s Celebrate, but I’m also a big fan of L Mawby’s Sex.

If you would like to have a virtual tasting experience, check out Michigan by the Bottle’s Tweet & Taste on Tuesday, December 14, at 7 PM EST. Hope to “see” you there!
